Diecast model buses, trams, trains, lorries and cars have long been popular collectables. Early Corgi and Dinky diecast models dating from the 1950s are highly collectable today as are older model trains from manufacturers such as Hornby, Lionel, Marklin, Bachmann and Fleishchmann. Most of these companies continue to produce models today, often producing the same model in a number of different transport company liveries. Model buses, in particular, are often available in many different liveries with authentic route details, licence plates and advertising.

Good quality diecast model vehicles are usually made to scale, meaning that they are sized in proportion to the real thing. For example, a 1:16 scale model car is exactly 1/16th the size of the actual car, in all respects. Popular scales for model cars, buses and lorries include 1:72 and 1:76. 1:76 scale is the correct scale for use with OO gauge model railway layouts - using the right-sized vehicles can really add to the realism of a layout.

High-quality diecast model buses have been popular with collectors for many years. Many offer terrific levels of realistic detail and larger models often have opening doors, bonnets, luggage compartments and other features that add to the authenticity of the model. Seating, dashboards and other interior features are usually faithfully recreated, as are engine details on some larger-scale models. Also popular with some collectors are diecast trams and trolley buses. These were once a common sight in our towns and cities and today are making a gradual comeback across the UK in cities such as Nottingham, Edinburgh and Sheffield.
