ITEM T139 - Early Black Glazed Troika St Ives Chimney Vase With Trident Mark, c1963-1967 - Extremely Rare

SOLD Aug 2009

Very early and highly collectable black-glazed Troika pottery St Ives Chimney vase.

This superb early Troika Chimney vase has geometric moulded decoration painted in blue and contrasting black oxide glazed sides. The vase stands approximately 19½cm tall, 11cm wide and 4½cm deep.

On the base this Chimney vase has the early, painted Troika pottery mark, 'Troika St Ives' alongside the Troika Trident pottery mark, dating c1963 to 1967. The remains of the original shop label are also still present! This chimney vase has no decorator's mark but this is not uncommon on these early pieces. I believe this example was decorated by Stella Benjamin but cannot be certain.

Interestingly, if you examine the design carefully you will see the word POT incised in the piece in the top right hand corner. Also when examined the blue sections on the vase have been enhanced by stamping small type-faced words into the piece at the time of making - stamped all over are the words Cornwall, England, Pottery and Handpainted to pick out a few. Quite novel additions from the Troika pottery!

Condition: Superb overall condition with some crazing to the inside and tiny moulding fault to shoulder. A really lovely example of an early piece of Troika pottery.
