Newcastle-based Maling pottery's illustrious history was distinguished in the 19th century by the volume, quality and diversity of its output of domestic and industrial wares. In the 1920s and 1930s, the Maling pottery started to place more emphasis on decorative wares, and Maling's fine decorative lustre wares, designed by Lucien Boullemier, bought widespread acclaim, comparing very favourably with the output of contemporary Stoke-on-Trent potteries.
