Wide Range Of Troika Marmalade Vases For Sale

If you’re thinking of buying a Troika pottery Marmalade vase then there’s certainly a wide range to choose from.

The Troika marmalade vase is a popular Troika vase that is within most people’s budgets and comes in a variety of colours, styles and designs. One Troika Marmalade vase can be very different to another Marmalade vase.

The Marmalade was first introduced when the pottery was based in St Ives in Cornwall (it moved to Newlyn in 1970). Based on this you can find early examples with the Troika St Ives pottery mark dating pre-1970′s such as the one illustrated below:

Typical in style to other Troika pieces form that era this vase has a brown wash base with large circles decorating all four sides and is fully marked with the Troika St Ives pottery mark on its base.

Later Marmalade vases dating from the 1970′s onwards from the Newlyn period will be marked with a combination of Troika, Cornwall and England and can have a varied style of decoration – see some examples below:

The base colour is usually cream, brown, blue or green but patterns can vary hugely, including animals, abstract design, letters or even stick people!

Troika Pottery & The Range Of Pieces Available

Most people will have heard of Troika pottery, but what they don’t realise is the range of pieces that the pottery produced in a relatively short period of production.

Based down in Cornwall the pottery only produced pieces for 20 years – a short time considering that potteries such as Doulton and Worcester have operated for centuries.

Originally based in St Ives they relocated to Newlyn in Cornwall in 1970. Over this period they produced pieces ranging from dishes, plates, lamps and vases to other display items such as pieces called the Chimney vase or Wheel vase. I’ve pictured below a few of the shapes that are collected today:

Rare & Unusual Troika St Ives Pottery Rectangular Vase

If you’re looking for a nice piece of Troika ware from the St. Ives period then take a look at our Troika Pottery section as we have just added a superb Troika St Ives Rectangular vase with a really unusual design.

This Troika vase is called a rectangular vase and belongs to the textured range that the pottery produced. It has the earlier Troika St Ives pottery mark indicating it is an early vase made when the pottery was based in St. Ives (1960-1970). This particular example has been decorated by Honor Curtis who worked at the pottery from 1968 until 1973. She used the mark on this vase from 1969 onwards so we can date this vase to c1969-1970.

It has been decorated with a brown base with the decoration on some sides being picked out in creams, deep browns and whites with part-glazed sections. On one side it has the Temple pattern, which is very similar to the Troika Taj Mahal pattern, and on another side it has an abstract face design picked out in brown and white glaze.

New to our Troika pottery section is this stunning early Troika St Ives Chimney vase with Trident mark to its base.

Decorated in blue and black oxide glazes, this piece is a superb example of the early work produced by the Troika pottery dating c1963 to 1967. Interstingly I noticed that all over the geometric pattern are small impressed words in a type font. Striking Troika Pottery D-plate – beats round ones!

The earlier pieces of Troika are among my favourite, especially those in the dark oxide or bronze glazes. It’s a special area for Troika collectors some staying well clear of these darker more unusual pieces and some collecting them with a passion.

The Troika D-plate, such as this one, offers an interesting alternative to standard round chargers and are almost always decorated with the bronze and dark glazes. This version has the standard printed Troika St Ives pottery mark. Occasionally they can be found with the moudled Troika St Ives mark along with the moulded Trident mark which is always nice. Nevertheless it is a nice example with some fantastic coloured glazes in the centre. At around 8″ square these D-plates always look good and offer a change from the many vases that often dominate collections!
